Activities of the Prior General

On the 1st of April this year, the Prior General, Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., took part in a meeting of the former pupils of the college of Santa María del Carmen in  Madrid, on the occasion of the college’s 50th anniversary. In his address he underlined the commitment of the Carmelite Order to education around the world and he recalled some moments from the time that he spent in this college as a youngster.

Accompanied by Fr. Mario Alfarano, O.Carm., the Delegate for the Carmelite Nuns, on the 29th of April, the Prior General led the celebration of the Eucharist at the closure of the elective assembly of the Federation of Santa María Magdalena de Pazzi of the Carmelite nuns in Italy that took place at Sassone (Rome, Italy) [Citoc 28/2017]. Likewise, at Sassone, on the 26th of May he led the celebration of the final Eucharist at the ongoing formation course for nuns that took place from the 16th to the 17th of May, and had as its theme the life and teaching of St. Mary Magdalene de’Pazzi. [Citoc 35/2017].
Recently, on the 26th of June, the Prior General spoke at the Carmelite symposium that was held on the campus of “Loyola University” in Chicago (USA), organized by the “Carmelite Institute” of North America, that had as its main theme, the inspiration that Carmelites may find in the pontificate of Pope Francis (“Pope Francis points the way for Carmel”). In his address the Prior General recalled the different occasions on which he has met Pope Francis and the different challenges that these years of his pontificate present to Carmel. The participants at the symposium included the provincials of the PCM province, Fr. William Harry, O.Carm., (who reported on the activities of the Carmelite Institute) and of the North American Province of St. Elias, Fr. Michael Kissane, O.Carm. along with many Carmelite and Discalced Carmelite friars, Carmelite sisters and lay Carmelites from many different groups.
Over this period, coinciding with various provincial chapters, the Prior General visited the monasteries of Barcelona, Tárrega, Vilafranca, Bañolas, Valencia, Córdoba, Antequera y Osuna (in Spain), Zenderen in the Netherlands and Erlangen in Germany.

As Carmelites We live our life of allegiance to Jesus Christ and to serve Him faithfully with a pure heart and a clear conscience through a commitment to seek the face of the living God (the contemplative dimension of life), through prayer, through fraternity, and through service (diakonia). These three fundamental elements of the charism are not distinct and unrelated values, but closely interwoven. 

All of these we live under the protection, inspiration and guidance of Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whom we honor as "our Mother and sister."
