the Carmelite Fraternity of Pozzo di Gotto

On November 25, the Prior General, Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., presided the Eucharist on the Solemnity of Christ The King with the Carmelite Fraternity of Pozzo di Gotto (Sicily, Italy). During the celebration he blessed an icon of Blessed Titus Brandsma, written by Pia Giannetto. The beautiful icon which will be venerated in the local church shows Blessed Titus surrounded by four significant aspects of his life: the prayerful Carmelite, the devotee of Mary, the prisoner who speaks to other prisoners, and the martyr who dies from an injection of carbolic acid.

Together with Fr. Desiderio García, O.Carm., Provincial of Aragon, Castile y Valencia, and of the General Postulator, Mrs. Giovanna Brizi, the Prior General participated in the IXth Seminar of the study group entitled “TPM” (“Texts for a Millennium” according to its initials in Spanish), which focused this year on Blessed Titus Brandsma, and which took place on November 28 and 29 in Madrid. The seminar took an interdisciplinary approach as part of which several dimensions related to the life of Blessed Titus were addressed: biography, martyrdom, spirituality, journalistic ethics, Esperanto, ecumenism, etc. In the final session some works of modern art representing the Carmelite martyr were presented. At the end of this session, the new religious library "Ars Carmelitana" was inaugurated, with numerous members of the public attending together with representatives from the main religious publishing houses in Spain.

On Saturday, December 1, the Prior General presided a solemn Mass of thanksgiving for the 75th anniversary of the Carmelite school "Mare de Deu del Carme" in Terrassa (Barcelona, Spain), accompanied by the Provincial of Catalonia, Fr. Luis Maza, O.Carm., and by numerous religious. As part of the cultural event which followed, the Prior General spoke about the Carmelite contribution to the field of education. Francesc Rubio, director of the school, and Amadeu Aguado, councilor at the city hall, were also present at the event. The latter expressed his gratitude to the Carmelite school for the work done there over the past number of years.

Finally, on December 7, the Prior General led the prayer Vigil of the Immaculate Conception at the Spanish National Church of Rome ("Santa Maria in Monserrato"), taking the theme "Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, a Door to Advent."

The Prior General has also recently visited the monastery of Santo Domingo, the new foundation of Azua (both in the Dominican Republic) and the monastery at Madrid.

As Carmelites We live our life of allegiance to Jesus Christ and to serve Him faithfully with a pure heart and a clear conscience through a commitment to seek the face of the living God (the contemplative dimension of life), through prayer, through fraternity, and through service (diakonia). These three fundamental elements of the charism are not distinct and unrelated values, but closely interwoven.

All of these we live under the protection, inspiration and guidance of Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whom we honor as "our Mother and sister."
