Prior General

 

Was born in Madrid (Spain) on August 19, 1962.  He went to school in the Colegio Santa María del Carmen in Madrid. During those years, in the school and in the Carmelite Parish Church in Sonsoles, he came to know the Carmelite Order, and felt called to live this charism. He entered the Order as a postulant, in Madrid, when he was eighteen years old.  Then he began his Novitiate on October 3, 1981, in Hinojosa del Duque.

After his Simple Profession, he studied Philosophy in the Pontifical University of Comillas  (Madrid) and in the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Seville. He studied Theology in the C.E.T. of Seville, in the Miltown Institute of Philosophy and Theology (Dublin) and in Comillas (Madrid). He obtained a degree in theology at the Pontifical University of Comillas, Madrid, in 1990. 

He made his Solemn Profession in Madrid on December 7, 1986 and in the same city, on September 13, 1988 he was ordained a priest.  For several years he taught in the Colegio Santa Maria del Carmen in Madrid.

Then he spent several years in the International College of San Alberto  in Rome where he obtained the degree of Doctor in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome and defended his thesis entitled: Reconciliatio cum Ecclesia como Res et Sacramentum della penitenza. Presence and influence of the thesis of B.F.M Xiberta (1897-1967) in the penitential Theology of the XX century.  His thesis was published in 1997 by the Edizioni Carmelitane in Rome.

When he returned to Spain, he became professor of Sacraments in the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of Comillas of Madrid, from February 1995.  At the same time, as professor he was invited by the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, in the years 1997-1998, 1999-2000, 2001-2002 to give numerous conferences and summer courses.

He was named member of the Institutum Carmelitanum of Rome, of the International Commission of Culture of the Carmelite Order during the six year term from 2001 – 2007, and elected Provincial Counsellor of the Province of Andalucía in 2002-2005 and in 2005-2008.

He is and has been a member of the redaction team of the review: ‘Escapulario del Carmen de Jerez de la Frontera’, where for the past thirty years he has been developing his literary talent, writing not only on Theology; Sal Terrae (Madrid) Fonte  (Madrid) and Estudios Eclesiásticos (Madrid). In addition, he has also won several literary awards writing brief essays or short stories. Being in charge of the Studies and professors of the TUP (University Theology for Post-graduates) of the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid, he gave classes in theology to lay persons for ten years.  In 2001 he was named Theological Adviser of the General Chapter.

Because of his great interest in the dialogue between Judaism and Christianity he was named member of the Centre of Jewish-Christian Studies of Madrid on several occasions in the Hispanic-Israelite Congress.

He was elected Prior General of the Carmelites at the General Chapter of Sassone,  (Rome) on September 13, 2007.
