Province of Betica (Spain)
The first house was opened in Andalusia in Gibraleón (1306 - 1320) by the Infantes de la Cerda. From there, the Carmelites made a foundation in Seville (1358) under the patronage of King D. Pedro I. Later on, in the vicinity of the capital, they opened the convent of Escacena del Campo (Huelva) in 1416, and Ecija (Seville) in 1425. In 1498 these four houses were detached from the Province of Castile, to form a new Province. At present the Province of Betica has about 79 religious working in Spain, Venezuela and Burkina Faso.

General Delegation of Bohemia and Moravia (Czech Republic)
In 1411, The Province of Bohemia separated from the Upper German Province and become with the friaries of Prague (founded in 1347) and Tachov (1385), and other friaries in Poland, Bylorussia and Hungary. In 1440, after the war of the Hussars, the friaries of Bohemia were given back to the Upper German Province. In 1462, the Province of Poland and Bohemia was founded, and after the destruction of the Province during the Reformation, Bohemia was once again erected as a province in 1593. After many changes to its composition, the Province was suppressed by the Emperor Josef II in 1781. Towards the end of 1989, when the country finally won its freedom, normal communications were once again opened between the friars in Czech Rep. and the General Council of the Carmelite Order in Rome. At present the General Delegation of Bohemia and Moravia has about 17 religious working in the Czech Rep. and in Italy. For more informations: www.karmel.cz

General Commissariat of Portugal
In 1493 the Province of Lusitania (Portugal) was established. The Province developed materially and spiritually in the XVII-XVIII centuries, until the time of the earthquake of 1755 which caused great damage. The Province was suppressed in 1834, when all the religious Orders in Portugal disappeared. The work of restoring Carmel in Portugal in 1930 was undertaken with the help of the Province of Betica, which found a convent in Lisbon (S. Quiteria). On 8 December 1992, the Provincial Commissariat of Portugal became a General Commissariat by decree of the General Council of the Order. At present it has about 24 religious working in Portugal. Province of Malta
The Carmelites arrived in Malta in 1418, when the noblewoman, Margaret d'Aragon, deeded the chapel and surrounding land of Lunzjata (Rabat) to any religious Order that would undertake the incumbent religious duties. The Carmelites accepted the offer. Subsequently, they opened priories in Valletta (1570), Vittoriosa (1582-1652), Mdina (1659), Balluta - Sliema (1892), Santa Venera (2 houses: 1913 and 1980), Fgura (1945) and Fleur-de-lys (1947). At present the Province of Malta has about 40 religious working in Malta, Bolivia, Italy and Spain. For more informations: http://www.karmelitani.org/

General Commissariat of La Vergine Bruna Naples
This Commissariat was only recently erected under this title. But it has inherited a tradition which goes back to 1524 when the Naples convent of Carmine Maggiore, even though remaining a community of the Neapolitan Province, nevertheless was withdrawn from that Province's jurisdiction and placed immediately under the Prior General. With the passage of time, this same convent acquired several granges (by 1617 it owned fifteen). At present the General Commissariat is made up of about 21 religious working in Italy and Tanzania. Province of Naples
In 1809, religious Orders were suppressed by the French under Joachim Murat, King of Naples. The six Carmelite Provinces in the kingdom, comprising eighty-three convents, thus disappeared. In 1847, after the restoration of the Bourbons, the Province of Naples was re-constituted from seven houses formerly of the Provinces of Puglia, Rome, and Abruzzo. These houses again fell victim to the general suppression in Italy of 1866, but the Carmelites were able to continue as pastors in the churches that remained open to the public. At present the Province of Naples has about 20 religious working in Italy. For more information: www.vitacarmelitana.org
