Message to the Order re the Coronavirus
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
on this rare occasion I want to address a word of support to all our members who in one way or another are affected by the continuing spread of Covid-19. Here in the Curia we have heard the instructions of the Italian government and we have done our best to follow all the instructions. This has meant saying to our staff that they should not come to work until further instructions. We have organized our life in such a way that none of us will have people coming to the house and no one will leave the house until the ban is lifted, except for emergencies and essential services. We recognize the sacrifice that this entails, but we feel that we have to allow ourselves to be guided by the advice of the experts.
We will keep in our thoughts and prayers, those who have died and their families who are in mourning. We will pray for the medical profession, that the researchers may succeed in identifying this virus and finding the best ways to protect the population from infection, and the doctors and nurses may be able to help all who have fallen victim to it.
We must not allow ourselves to lose confidence or to be gripped by fear. This experience may lead us to reflect on how powerless we are, despite all our progress. At moments like this we realize more clearly that without God, we can do nothing. It is a good moment for us to renew our faith in God and our commitment to the wellbeing of one another, and in a special way our care for the poor, for the ones who are least able to cope when life gets difficult. In the time that we spend confined to our homes, we may find ourselves thinking and praying more, at one with Mary the Mother of God who kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Míceál O'Neill, O.Carm.

Thursday of the first week of Lent
Many and varied are the ways in which our saintly forefathers laid down how everyone, whatever his station or the kind of religious observance he has chosen, should live a life in allegiance to Jesus Christ - how, pure in heart and stout in conscience, he must be unswerving in the service of the Master. Carmelite Rule [2]
Let's pray
Merciful Father, look up on
us, this family,
and help us to overcome our own ego, selfishness
and fix our eyes toward You only
and desire You only. Amen.
Sunday of the first week of Lent
"Each one of you is to stay in his own cell or nearby, pondering the Lord's law day and night and keeping watch at his prayers unless attending to some other duty." ~ Carmelite Rule [10]
God, our Father
by the celebration of this Lent,
a Sacramental sign of our conversion,
grant us, your faithful people,
the nourishment of recognizing the mystery Christ,
that we may be a testimony of your love,
We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
The return of the Carmelites to the shrine of St Angelus, Licata (Agrigento, Italy)
On the occasion of the eighth centenary of the martyrdom of St Angelus of Jerusalem (5 May 1220-5 May 2021), the Carmelite Order has organized a rich calendar of religious and cultural events. Please consult the website dedicated to the event (www.ottavocentenariosantangelo.org). This centenary will also coincide with the return of the Carmelites after 28 years of absence to the Shrine of Licata, where the relics of the martyred saint are kept. The new international community will take up residence in the Shrine on March 1, 2020 and on March 8 will be officially presented to the local ecclesial community by Cardinal Francesco Montenegro, Archbishop of Agrigento. The new international community will be composed of Fr. Antonino Mascali, O.Carm., (Ita), Rector of the Sanctuary and Prior, Fr. Gerard Carlos Araujo Tang Choon, O.Carm., (SEL) and Fr. José Adriano Gomes Saboia, O.Carm., (Pern).
In the coming weeks the Postulator General, in agreement with the Archdiocese of Agrigento, will carry out the canonical recognition of the mortal remains of St Angelus and the restoration of the precious silver urn that contains them will begin. The last canonical recognition was done in 1623. After the canonical recognition and conservation treatment, the saint’s mortal remains will be solemnly displayed in the Sanctuary of Licata during the jubilee year for the public veneration of the faithful.
The Apostolic Penitentiary, at the request of the Order, also granted the possibility of gaining a plenary indulgence during the jubilee year, which runs from 5 May 2020 to 5 May 2021, at all the churches of the Carmelite Order, in the Shrine of Saint Angelus, Martyr in Licata, where the remains of the Saint are kept, in the “mother” church of Sant'Angelo Muxaro (both belonging to the archdiocese of Agrigento), in the other churches dedicated to the holy martyr and in the churches of the places where he is venerated..
