News from the General Council
The new General Council continues to meet in Rome to set out a plan for the next six years which will implement the decisions made by the General Chapter held in Sassone in September. One of the key discussions the Council has had was on the subject of the Order’s priority areas and the members of the General Council responsible for them. One of the issues that the General Chapter asked the Council to consider was that of the General Commissions of the Order and after much thought the Council has decided to restructure these commissions so that they can work more effectively to meet the challenges of the changing world in which the Order lives and works.
Membership of the Commissions will be announced in due course, but the following members of the Council have been appointed to guide the work of the priority areas as follows:
* Communications: Christian Körner, O. Carm. (Delegate)
* Formation: John Keating, O. Carm.
* Evangelisation: Desiré Unen Alimange, O. Carm.
* Justice and Peace: Albertus Herwanta, O. Carm.
* Nuns and Sisters: Josef Jančář, O. Carm. (Delegate)
* Laity: Josef Jančář, O. Carm.
These councillors will be the presidents of their respective commissions and responsible to the General Council for their activities.
In addition, the General Council has decided to allocate to two new areas of responsibility. First, at the General Chapter, mention was made of the importance of Carmelite schools and of those who work with young people and for this reason the General Council has appointed Raul Maraví to be Delegate for Schools and Youth. He and the General Commission to be appointed will be responsible for organising a congress on this subject, as requested by the Chapter.
The General Chapter also asked the Council to organise a significant number of meetings over the next six years: on the Word of God, liturgy, schools, spirituality, the Carmelite Family, Justice and Peace, as well as the regular ones on formation for formandi, formators, and ongoing formation. Given the number and scale of the meetings envisaged, the Council has asked Kevin Alban, the Bursar General, to be responsible for the area of Meetings and Congresses to assist in co-ordination, planning and financing them.
The Council will now turn its attention to the intellectual and cultural life of the Order and to the membership of the General Commissions of the Order.

Technical Difficulties with CARMELITES.INFO
We apologize to those who were unable to access the CITOC-online #79 sent out on November 28. Shortly after the message was distributed, the internet company disappeared. This means that all of our websites managed by that company simply ceased to exist. Using a new internet provider, we have restored the web pages online from backups (some pictures are still missing).
However, there was no backup of the email addresses used to send CITOC-online. We are in the process of restoring the CITOC-online mailing list from existing mailing lists but we are sure we will miss some people. They need only send an email to citoc1 @ ocarm.org and their email address will be added back in. If you received this email, you need not send your email address in again!
To maintain better control of the list, we will be using a new mailing program. We hope that this will eliminate the problem of email addresses being dropped from the list without warning.
The switch in internet providers actually provides the opportunity to use some of the latest techologies on the websites in the coming months and years-- providing the Order with better communications!

Carmelites Hailed as Teachers
of Prayer
of Prayer
Being Christian is not about espousing ideas or making
moral choices, but about encountering a person, says Benedict XVI,
according to a report published by Zenit.org in Rome. The Pope expressed
this in a message he wrote to Father Joseph Chalmers, Prior General of
the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel,
who are gathered for their General Chapter in Rome through Sept. 22.
The
first Carmelites, "welcoming the lordship of Christ over their lives,
made themselves available to be transformed by his love. This is the
fundamental decision that every Christian faces," he added.
The Pope
commented on the theme of the general chapter: "'In Obsequio Jesu
Christi': A Prayerful and Prophetic Community in a Changing World." He
said the theme "well highlights the particular manner in which the
Carmelite Order seeks to respond to God's love, through a life infused
with prayer, fraternity and the prophetic spirit."
"With their eyes
fixed on Christ and trusting in the help of the saints who during the
last eight centuries have incarnated the dictates of the Rule of Carmel,
each member of the Order of Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of
Mount Carmel feels called to be a credible witness of the spiritual
dimension of every human being," Benedict XVI said.

General Council Plenary Session
The General Council held its penultimate plenary session in Rome at the Curia house from 12 to 22 February 2007. The main business of the meetings was to examine and make provision for the 24 Indians who have joined our order from the Discalced. Four of these friars were guests of the Curia and took part in the plenary meetings.
The Prior General and Council have constituted this group as 'The Indian Carmelite Community of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and St. Albert of Jerusalem’ and Fr Sedric D’cruz has been named as the Prior General’s representative for this new community. Members of this group will be working in two Latin dioceses in Kerala, Neyyattinkara in the south of the region and Kannur in the north. There are also friars working in the parish of Pietrasanta on the coast in Tuscany, and in three parishes in the diocese of Paderborn, Germany. The General Council also discussed how best to integrate these friars into the order through courses and community experiences in various provinces, mostly in the English-speaking world. Experts in formation, history and spirituality will also be spending time with these friars in India.
The Council received reports on the activities of the members of the Council in the past few months, including the news from the assembly of the Rio Province and from the meeting of the central committee of the Institutum Carmelitanum held in Nairobi. On the recommendation of the members of the General Delegation of Colombia, the Prior General appointed Pedro Arenas as General Delegate.
The Council also spent some time examining the Ratio monalium for the formation of our nuns. The composition and editing of this project has been a collaborative effort of various nuns from Spain, Italy, the Philippines and the USA. The General Council approved the new text and ordered its publication by Edizioni Carmelitane.
Plans were also discussed for the online version of the Carmelite Directory project and for the publication of the Carmelite Spiritual Dictionary, a joint venture with the Discalced.
The final plenary session of the sexennium will be held from 10 to 26 May 2007, and will include a visit to Florence for the celebrations for the fourth centenary of the death of St. Mary Magdalen de’Pazzi.

In August 2009 a well prepared reorganization of the staff of in the Dutch Carmelite Institute (NCI) took place. Fr. Tjeu Timmermans has been appointed as the new director and Fr. Rudolf van Dijk as the academic secretary. The staff holds its monthly meetings of which a report will be given to the NCI commission. This commission functions as the daily board of the institute and reports to the Provincial Council of the Dutch Province.
The Dutch Carmelite Institute consists of seven main sections: 1) Carmelite library, 2) Carmelite archives, 3) Titus Brandsma archives, 4) documentations, 5) iconographic collection, 6) Carmelite scientific research and publication and 7) formation and education.
The staff of the institute decided to give high priority to the Titus Brandsma archives. Sr. Susan van Driel has been given the task of reorganizing these archives, to analyse and describe their contents and to digitise them. The Titus Brandsma archives contain material that can be used worldwide for publications on Bl. Titus and his inheritance.
Recently Fr. Harrie Reinders was appointed to work on listing, describing, digitising and opening up the iconographic collection. The collection contains several thousand Carmelite illustrations, cards, etchings, prints, pictures, slides and films. By reorganising the iconographic collection the NCI will be able to fulfil the growing need of Carmelites icons.

Victimae Paschali laudes
immolent Christiani.
Agnus redemit oves:
Christus innocens Patri
reconciliavit peccatores.
Mors et vita duello
conflixere mirando:
dux vitae mortuus,
regnat vivus…
Scimus Christum surrexisse
a mortuis vere:
Tu nobis, victor Rex miserere
Amen. Alleluia.
