Asia-Australia-Oceania
The foundation of Carmel in Indonesia, which began in 1923, was the first mission in Asia, thanks to the initial work of the three Dutch missionaries: Clement van der Pas, Paschal Breukel, and Linus Henckens. Today, Indonesia has become the largest province in the Order. After starting the foundation in Indonesia in 1958, the Province of Holland gave birth to the presence of Carmel in the Philippines. In 1973, the Province of Upper Germany initiated a foundation of the Carmelite of the Syrian Malabar rite in India. In 1996, the Province of Saint Elias of New York started a foundation in Vietnam. The Philippines Province established its presence in Papua New Guinea in 2008. Australia started the mission in East Timor in 2001, and Indonesia in Hong Kong in 2013. Finally, in 2011, a foundation of Carmelites of the Latin rite was started in India. The presence of Carmel in Australia began in 1881, on the initiative of some missionaries from the Province of Ireland who settled in Gawler. These are the missionaries: Joseph Butler, Brocard Leybourne, Ignatius Carr, Patrick Shaffrey and Hilarion Byrne.
