Archbishop José Cardoso Sobrinho, O.Carm.

Bishop José was born on June 30, 1933 in Caruaru, Brazil. After finishing his minor seminary and major seminary of the Order of Carmelites, Fluminense Province he was sent to Rome for theology and doctorate and where he was ordained  a priest on April 28, 1957.



He has a PhD in canon law at Gregorian University, and a PhD in civil law at the Lateran University in Rome.



He was a professor of Canon Law in Rome at the International College of St. Albert the Carmelite Order (1960-1968), General Councilor of the  Order (1971-1977), General Procurator of the Order (1971-1979).



On April 28, 1979, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Paracatu, Minas Gerais, by Pope John Paul II and  on  April 10, 1985 he was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife.



Between 1987 and 1991 was President of the Northeast Region of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil.



After completing 75 years of age on 30 June 2008, Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation as archbishop according to law.
