Bishop Francisco De Sales Alencar Batista, O.Carm.

BISHOP FRANCISCO DE SALES ALENCAR BATISTA

Fr. Francesco Sales was born on April 17, 1968 in Araripina, Pernambuco, Brazil and a member of the Carmelite Province of Pernambuco. He made his profession in the Carmelite Order in 1988 and was ordained a priest in 1995. He studied philosophy at the Vincentino Institute of Philosophy in Curitiba and  Salesian Institute of Philosophy in Recife, and theology at the Miltown Institute in Ireland. Back to Brazil, he served as provincial secretary, fomator, Provincial Concilor and Parish pastor. From 2005 to 2011 he was a prior Provincial of the Province of Pernambuco. In 2012 he was a Vice-Prior of St. Albert's International Centre in Rome and during this time he obtained a license in sacred theology at the Teresianum Pontifical. In 2013 he was appointed General Secretary of the Order in 2013 and was appointed bishop of the diocese of Cajazeiras, in Brazil, by Pope Francis on 8th June 2016.
